Creating Something from Scratch
This is a normal progress of any creation. But building something from zero needs to be acknowledged more.
How can I explain this in the most relevant way?
Last night, my husband welcomed new members to his writing club. He was thrilled because starting this club in our new location had been challenging. While he was comfortable hosting writing groups downtown, beginning a new one with unfamiliar people in a place we'd only lived for two weeks felt daunting. Still, he persevered. Now, just two weeks later, he's running a writing club with 5 members.
He looked at me and said, "I am so proud that I started!"
And he continued, "Oh, baby, I am so proud of you, too. You've worked so hard to build this nonprofit to where it is now. You have a product, run a team. What an accomplishment! I should have acknowledged your efforts more."
He is right. Building our nonprofit to its current level of recognition has been even more challenging than starting a writing club. Starting from zero means being a true dreamer. You set your own goals, conduct your research, and tackle the most difficult part: executing your ideas.
In between were sleepless nights, doubts, trials and errors, and finding time to work while caring for a newborn. The only thing I knew was that if I didn't move forward, I would go nowhere.
Today, our UI/UX intern team has collected data from their usability test, where real young people used and provided feedback about our MVP web app. Reading their responses feels surreal. While this year-long journey might seem like just a blink to others, for me, it has been filled with countless hours of unseen effort.
We still have so much work ahead of us! Yet without taking that first step, we wouldn't have any direction at all.
